If you’re not familiar with a Health Care Savings Account, it’s a great way to pay for your medical costs and reduce your taxable income. You basically have a set amount of pre-tax money deducted from each paycheck and applied towards a HCSA account. The total value of the account is available on January 1 of each year, so you’re “paying back” the account during the year with your paycheck deductions.
My New Dell Inspiron PC

I just bought a new Dell PC for the home. It’s been 10 years since I’ve done that. That’s right, TEN years. My old computer is a Micron 266MHz box with 20G of memory. It’s slow compared to today’s standards, but it was a top-notch machine back in 1997. All I use it for these days is Quicken and some random surfing.
As usual, I’m having a bit of buyer’s remorse. I hated spending the money, but I had to make the purchase since much of my data and many of my apps are stored on my work laptop. I need to get my personal stuff off of there.
But, the reason I don’t like spending money on things like this is there is little to no return on the investment. For the most part, my new computer is going to sit idle for most of the day. I use it for Quicken once a week or so, and I’ll probably use it to work on this site, but otherwise, it’s a non-working asset.
Maybe I should sign up for the Seti@home project….at least I’d know my PC is being used.
Sesame Street Warning

My son and I usually watch the evening news together. Or rather, I’ll listen to it and we play together. But last night, my son stopped playing and nearly broke his neck turning to the TV when Katie Couric mentioned the words “Sesame Street”. He knew it wasn’t time for it, but he wanted to see Big Bird and Cookie Monster.
CBS did a story on the recent release of the first several seasons of Sesame Street on DVD. The DVD apparently has a warning on it that warns adults of the scenes contained in the various episodes. The scenes contain:
- Children playing in a construction yard
- Children running through a sewer pipe
- Children riding their bicycles without a helmet
- A strange man (Gordon) inviting a young girl into his house for ice cream
What a sign of the times! Sesame Street isn’t safe for kids anymore. I’m not saying I don’t agree with some of the ideas behind the warning, but who would have thought it would have been necessary?

I’m a big fan of the Quicken financial management software made by Intuit. I’ve been using the software since 1993 to manage my personal finances, budgeting, track my investments, etc. I honestly can’t imagine anyone not using a similar software program to manage their money. After all, “you can’t manage what you don’t measure.”
Anyway, I consider myself a “power user” and am pretty familiar with most of the functions built into the software, so I thought I’d share some tips and tricks I’ve learned along the way….more posts to follow.
